The Rhythm of Carpet Work
The carpet guys came and replaced the old carpet. I sat there and heard them hammering away as they were doing the work of pulling up the carpet, putting the new carpet down, etc. I sat there listening to it when I heard one sequence of hammering that sounded like it could be in rhythm. I thought about that one sequence over and over and over again and analyzed it. I shortly was able to put it into a rhythm in sheet music form, like this:
I put it in 6/8 timing, and the first measure is 4 dotted eighth notes, which is quite syncopated.
I also heard another sequence of hammering, analyzed it, and again wrote it down in music form, and it went like this:
It could be written like the picture as I wrote it here, or the last note of the first measure could be written as a pick-up note.
I heard another tool going as the guys were working. This tool did not sound like a hammer, but it sounded like it screeched against the floor. The sequence the tool made was in groups of four, as if it were to be in 4/4 timing rather than 6/8 timing, like this:
The way the tool screeched made it sound like I should write the sequence with grace notes. So I did.
There is another way that the sequence I just mentioned can be written. It can be written in 6/8 timing, but each group of four notes would be written as quadruplets. In the music group I am in, I played Gustav Holst's Uranus: The Magician from The Planets, which is in 6/4 timing. It is the same concept except that Uranus: The Magician is written with quarter notes instead of eighth notes. One measure of this song has the first three beats and then a group of four notes equaling three beats in the measure, or quadruplets. So here is an example of writing quadruplets in 6/8 timing:
The reason I explained all of that just now is because I am taking all of those sequences and writing a song out of them. This is a rhythm song only, there are no pitches in this song. The base rhythm or main rhythm is the first hammering sequence I mentioned, with the syncopated dotted eighth notes. And I am including the second one as well as the third one, which I will write as quadruplets.
Here is one of the pages of what I have written so far. On the top, the rests on the top line should be dotted half rests instead of plain half rests. My mind got carried away and confused. But this is a rough draft.
