A Simple, Fun & Hand-Crafted Activity: Storytelling

I recently watched the movie Out Of Africa while on vacation. It is a good movie, although it is very long, almost 3 hours. (It also features the calm, lovely second movement of the Mozart Clarinet Concerto in its score). Towards the beginning of the movie, Karen, the main character, is sitting with friend Denys in front of a fireplace. For entertainment and fun, after finishing their regular everyday conversations, the fun activity of the night was to tell and make up a story! Karen and Denys went back and forth, each character adding more to the story. What a breath of fresh air! I enjoy writing on this blog, poetry, songwriting and music composition in its many forms, but after watching that scene, I think it would be a fun activity to do on a date, or when you have friends or relatives over! Just sit down, someone begins the story, and you can go around in a circle and expound on the story, or if you are on a date, go back and forth like the movie! Use your imagination. The story can be realistic, or it can be exaggerated or very funny. You can even strum some chords on your guitar while the story is being told.

That point in the movie made me realize that because the plot is set in 1914, stories were all people had. Sometimes records and phonographs, but for the most part, people made their own music and stories from scratch. It may seem simple, but it feels good to make up stories this way, and especially with others! I have forgotten how much fun it is to just sit down and tell a story. It is almost unheard of now in a world full of tablets and social media. My mom and I would tell bedtime stories together when I was a kid. Stories were also told in the car, often on our way to vacation. However, storytelling is a good and fun activity for adults too! Not to mention that it's free! (and no drink required. Well, how about some tea and coffee). What better way to unwind than to create?
