Things People Posted on Facebook in 2008

Facebook in the 2000s was fun. It was much better than the politics, serious-matter-laden social media platform of today. Back then, it was all about posting random things to make people laugh, listen to music, and play games. There was no pressure to post major accomplishments in your life to compare yourself to, just mindless entertainment. Here are a few of the things I remember seeing when I first got a Facebook in middle school:

Pieces of Flair-online "buttons" with pictures of your interests, such as cats, clarinets, or mountains, sometimes with funny sayings on them.

Classic Memes, Goth and Emo Memes. The pictures were not perfect.

Once, a schoolmate posted a video of herself and a friend at home, in their pajamas, (with messy ponytails and no makeup) making pancakes and tossing them across the kitchen from pan to plate. "The Ultimate Flapjack!" the girl said as she laughed.

Another friend in early high school (early 2010 by this point) posted pictures of herself, in everyday clothing and with imperfect hair, playing the acoustic guitars in the music store I went to in the mall as a child, not too long before the store closed. The pictures had no filter.

Playing games such as Sorority Life and Farmville

Pictures of friends jumping on the bed, dancing in the living room, and acting silly. The pictures were unedited, it would never be "allowed" in social media culture today. Showcased the way life really was.

There were funny, magazine-type quizzes such as "Which Winnie the Pooh Character Are You?" and "What is Your Style- Emo, Girly Girl, Tomboy, etc.?" and you could proudly post your results on your wall.

I feel that people are more immature today on Facebook than they were back then, no matter their age. It is time we return to the simpler Facebook if we insist on social media being a part of our world. What do you think?
