Goodwill Lounge Pillow Makeover

In August I let my younger sister use my guest bed for her house at college. It was the bed on which I kept my blue, green and purple 2000's bedding (see the earlier post I wrote about 2000s styles). I was left with a wide open space. What should I do with this space now? I thought about buying a cheap, stylish futon for a while.

I love going to Target. I love their on-trend, often Bohemian hippie styles of home decor and furniture combined with the modernness of IKEA. One day by accident, I fell in love with the shelves full of lounge pillows. They were in yellow, red, green and blue, often with fringe on the ends. They were rolled up, and you unroll the pillow on the floor. They looked comfortable, and so being someone who enjoys a unique look, I decided this is what I wanted to replace the bed.

I went home and looked up the price of these lovely pillows. They looked so cute, but the price was not so cute. I looked on Amazon, but it was not the same. So, on a whim, I went to Goodwill near where I worked. As I was about to check out, a lounge pillow caught my eye, and it was a very cool blue and white pattern. And for $13. I added it to my cart and took it home. It smelled musty so I put it in the washing machine and aired it out to dry.

When I took a closer look at it, to my horror, I found that large spots if the blue fabric were bleached, and on the head rest, there was a large hole. Instead of exchanging it at the Goodwill and spending more money on another pillow, I decided to use fabric from some old curtains to cover up the bleach and hole, and to buy fringe from the fabric store and sew them on myself. Besides, I liked this pattern better than anything I'd found at Target. The pattern could've passed off as that style too.

I am a beginner-level, amateur seamstress. You can tell I hand sewed most of the curtain fabric onto the pillow. But it turned out to be very sturdy. It will hold up well. I used the sewing machine for a few parts of it, like the swirly "patches" of curtain fabric I used to cover up the hole and bleach spots. I decided to go with the flow and use small, contingent shapes to make it more artsy.

Finally, I snipped and moved 2 of the ties over to the foot of the pillow, sewed them back on, and put on the fringe, and added some beads for extra detail.

What a nice place to sit, read, play games, or even nap!
