This Past Semester
I said in an earlier post that I would expound more on my compositions later. I am going to talk about my compositions and arrangements that I have written this past semester.
Early in September, my new clarinet professor asked me what my major was. I told her that it was Film Scoring. She then explained to me that she wanted to find opportunities to give students job experience before they graduate so they can have a better chance of being employed.
I thought that was a great idea. As an introvert, I never liked the idea of networking, but now that I have gotten several gigs over the past 2 years, I am used to it and like meeting new music businesspeople. I like being professional and building a good reputation in the music industry.
So, in the middle of September, my professor asked me if I would like to arrange some praise songs for the clarinet ensemble and the woodwind quintet that I play in. Of course, I agreed to it.
The first arrangement I wrote was "Come, Now is the Time to Worship" for the clarinet ensemble. It was written in an upbeat, contemporary style. It consists of four parts, and the ensemble enjoyed it and thought it was good. After that, my friend who also plays clarinet suggested I arrange "At the Cross" or "Alas and Did My Savior Bleed." So I arranged that hymn as well. Both were a success. I enjoyed arranging these songs.
I arranged "O, the Deep Deep Love of Jesus" for the woodwind quintet. It has a Celtic feel. The School of Music puts on shows with several of our ensembles twice a year for people who are visiting. We played this arrangement at both shows. I also arranged Perry Como's "It's Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas."
Lastly, my friend who plays the bassoon asked me to write an arrangement of Christmas songs for the bassoon quartet. I gladly did it. I do not know where they played it, but I enjoyed writing it.
For Film Scoring class, I had to write two film scores. The first one was called "Infection", and was put with a clip of Alfred Hitchcock's "The Birds" movie. The second one was called "The Wandering", and it was with a clip of Dead Space 3. I had to work with sound effects for this cue. I am still working on getting the audio and video files of these pieces so I can show them here!
These are the compositions and arrangements I have written. I enjoyed them and hope to do even more this upcoming semester. I hope to eventually get paid to do what I am already doing.
