Dragon #7: Beast In the Wilderness and homemade studio equipment
I am currently working on the last dragon for my art concentration, #12. I also have 3 songs that I recorded, and I have made a homemade pop filter.
This is the 7th dragon of my concentration. It is a colored pencil drawing of a white dragon sitting on a rugged bank next to water.
This was very detailed and took quite awhile. Here is a close up of the dragon and its head and face.
Homemade Recording Studio Pop Filter
Recently I got two books from the library about studio recording. I want to learn as much as I can about it. The books are Home Recording for Musicians for Dummies by Jeff Strong and Home Recording Power by Ben Milstead. The first day I read Home Recording for Musicians for Dummies, I already learned something and put it into practice. I learned that you can make a pop filter from a simple coat hanger and pantyhose.
A pop filter is used in front of mics to eliminate popping sounds and bumps so they do not get into the recording. A typical pop filter is a piece of nylon stretched out on a structure that goes in front of the mic. Since that is what it is, and pantyhose are nylon, I was able to make a pop filter and save myself some money.
..... So here is my pop filter.
It is made of pantyhose, a coat hanger, and duct tape. That's it! I unwound a coat hanger with pliers. Then I folded the coat hanger wire in half , wrapped it around a bottle that was 6" in diameter, and twisted the ends of the wire together. I cut the leg off a pair of pantyhose and stretched it over the round part of the wire. Then I taped it down to the wire with duct tape. I bent the wire so that it fit onto my microphone stand. To make an opening to go over the microphone stand screw, I taped the wire up with masking tape, and since I do not carry this mic equipment anywhere, it works well. That's it! It's that simple!
The picture on the right is the wire wrapped around the stand.
Now all I need is a shock mount, which isolates the mic completely from bumps and pops.
My songs will be here soon!
